I beg of you... BEG of you... do not stay at a chain hotel (e.g., Hyatt, etc.). The joy of traveling and hotelling is compounded by staying at nifty, locally-inspired, individually owned independent hotels.
I recommend the Sunset Tower Hotel, the Grafton on Sunset, the Hollywood Roosevelt, or even the Mondrian.
Thanks, PJS, the Mondrian was on our first list, but we're trying to avoid making a house payment for a room we'll rarely be in. I like the looks of the Grafton, and people are saying Le Montrose is nice.

I've no idea on the inside of the places, but the areas have no major safety worries if you ask me. As FB has no doubt advise,d find one with parking - you'll need it. (Your email wasn't attached to the comment you left, so I couldn't respond!!!)
Thanks, J. Ask about parking. Check.

woohoo shameless plug! like a good squirrel here's what i dug up for you:
i have to disagree with the hollywood roosevelt, defamer will provide you with many clientele horrors of the roosevelt even though that amanda demme chick is no longer promoting the place. plus i was personally disappointed with the quality of the lounge area, banquet hall, parking, etc.
actually, now that they've closed the club that amanda whoever was running as a coke pit, they're trying to win back clientele and it's cheap. but it's right next to hollywood and vine, which can get really trafficky on the weekends, human and car.
a friend from disney says no to the grafton, saying it's just not up to par - Boa the restaurant is up to par but not the hotel. he suggests the montrose - cool but not overtly hip.
it seems like a lot of the hotels you've asked about are on sunset. if you're gonna have a car you might want to avoid all the bustling sunset traffic, especially if the hotels empty on to sunset.
in terms of price, the mondrian, chamberlain and hyatt are within striking range of each other. i'm not sure if that affects your decision with the other hotels.
my friend who used to work for the Kor group which owns the chamberlain says it's hip and fun, but he said that about the avalon too. and avalon is like that german super modern ambiance of that expedia hotel commercial with the old couple trying to discover the shower activator along a metal wall. but maybe less metal. i like the avalon for the funky but apparently the chamberlain is better than the avalon.
suggestions-
not to suggest a chain, but this is like an international chain so i would suggest the Sofitel down by the beverly center. it's equal parts accessible to weho, sunset, it was recently extensively remodeled and rumored to have gorgeous remodeled rooms and has a host of new designer restaurants like stone rose. i would put it at the top of the price range (and therefore first to be chopped). oh and hotels.com is running a 25% off special to stay in august (my query was the 2th to the 9th).
a second suggestion at the top of the range, though if you can secure a corporate rate (about 250) is the Four Seasons on Doheny. granted i'm sure it's also a house payment.
another suggestion in the beverly hills edge is the le meridien, it's down the street from sofitel but equally accessible to weho up one street, and south enough out of the weho and sunset traffic that it's easier to get anywhere. it's at the north end of restaurant row so you're not at a loss for food options.
my last suggestion, because i'm now just peppering your selection with extra entrees, is the Orlando hotel, it's on the 3rd street in los angeles with lots of little restaurants including some of the top picks within walking distance. it is slightly out of west hollywood (1 mile) but in a quieter area as compared to sunset which will still have drunken assholes at 4am and it's about 20% cheaper than the chamberlain, hyatt, montrose, etc.
give me more search parameters if you want a more focused response - i can't imagine i've given you a very good response in terms of selecting one.
if i had to, my personal vote is that last one, the orlando - looks a tad industrial from the outside but it's like the chamberlain inside, a little aways away from weho if you have a car so it's good to get away (at least in my opinion) and there are tons of daytime options in walking distance (shopping: bev center, the grove; restaurants: whatever hot restaurant they opened at the bottom, restaurant row, 3rd street options; quiet neighborhood after dark dark).
let me know if you want more (or less) info, squirrel still at your service!
