So Long, Moore-ons

Roy Moore and his Moore-ons (pronounced moe-rons) have been embarrassed in the Alabama Republican primary tonight. With two-thirds of the boxes in, Roy and the other four Pharisees went down in flames, with none receiving more than 42 percent of the vote. (The highest vote-getter was Chief Moore-on Tom Parker -- an incumbent Supreme Court justice with high name recognition and plenty of pre-election advertising dollars.)

Just a year ago, many of the so-called experts and pundits were predicting Moore could possibly unseat incumbent Gov. Bob Riley. They were wrong.

Governor
Bob Riley -- 192,653 -- 63.12%
Roy Moore -- 112,572 -- 36.88%

Supreme Court Chief Justice
Drayton Nabers -- 155,200 -- 58.12%
Tom Parker -- 111,812 -- 41.88%

Supreme Court Place 1
Champ Lyons -- 136,795 -- 58.73%
Ben Hand (Moore-on) -- 96,125 -- 41.27%

Supreme Court Place 2
Tom Woodall -- 160,384 -- 71.12%
Hank Fowler (Moore-on) -- 65,127 -- 28.88%

Supreme Court Place 3
Lyn Stuart -- 160,156 -- 69.65%
Alan Zeigler (Moore-on) -- 69,785 -- 30.35%

If you're keeping score at home, that's 0-4. Goodbye and good riddance.

On other note, the statewide vote on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage (although state law already forbids it) is well on its way to passing: currently the "yes" camp has 81.5 percent to the "no" side at 18.5 percent. So far, 359,000 Republican votes have been counted. The current total in favor of banning same-sex marriage is 543,000, which means -- even if every single Republican in the state voted for the amendment (and I can tell you that's not true) -- 47 percent of Democrats also voted for it.

As you may recall, BaT reported yesterday that a "victory" would be a 65-35 split. With a large Democrat turnout (traditional in Alabama, since may local offices are filled with Dems), we were overly optimistic.

Oh well, at last, something the two parties in the state can agree upon: "We can't let the queers marry!"
