Broken Bat Mountain?

Finally, after 15 years, "The Dreyfus Affair" may make it to the big screen. The book, written by "The Deal" author Peter Lefcourt, was published in 1992. It is the tale of a married professional baseball player who falls in love with his teammate, and the affair is exposed.

A couple of studios have discussed turning the novel into a motion picture, but they never did. Now producer Andrew Lang has acquired the rights.

"The time is right for The Dreyfus Affair to be made into a film," said Lang, who had been negotiating the rights for the past two months. "At its heart, Peter's groundbreaking novel is a crowd-pleasing love story. Our film will remain faithful to the book's upbeat and provocative roots, which is why we are looking at directors who have demonstrated a razor's-edge sense of comedic timing."

If you haven't read the book, you should. It's tame, compared to today's standards. But when first published, this book was quite edgy. Two gay professional baseball players? One white, one black? I reviewed this book for a print publication shortly after its release. Apparently, there was much discussion over whether to even run the review. Considering all that's happened since then (with "Brokeback Mountain" just being the latest), it's humorous now.

By the way, to learn more about the inspiration for Lefcourt, read about the original Dreyfus Affair.
