If one family is so far apart on this issue, how can we as a nation agree?

Well, I think a lot of families are divided on the issue of gay marriage and other social issues like abortion. I noticed that Alveda King is speaking at the Democrats for Life breakfast before the March for Life in Washington this month.

Martin Luther King might have been a social conservative on gay marriage and other matters if he were alive today or maybe not. Dr. King's close working association with Bayard Rustin (who was a fairly openly gay man) suggests that he was not homophobic but that does not necessarily equate with support for gay marriage.

Rustin's influence in the civil rights movement is often overlooked. It was Bayard Rustin who convinced Dr. King to adopt a strategy of non-violence. Rustin was a democratic socialist who later chaired Social Democrats USA, but also a strong anti-communist and critic of the New Left tactics during the Vietnam war era.
