Not-So-Pretty In Pink
The University of Iowa is taking heat for the pink visitors' locker room at its football stadium, which critics believe is sexist and homophobic.
Everything about the Kinnick Stadium locker room is pink -- even the urinals.
Former football coach Hayden Fry had the visiting team's locker room painted pink in the 1970s, claiming the color would pacify the visiting team. University officials recently expanded the paint scheme while renovating the stadium.
Thinking a pink lockerroom will have an effect on highly skilled college athletes is silly. More silly, of course, is the response from some in the "gay community."
Kevin Boyer, co-vice chair of the Gay Games Chicago, disagreed with the athletic director's assessment. "Most people, hearing that the Iowa visitors' locker room is pink, would immediately recognize that the color is intended as a pre-game insult to the masculinity of the visiting team."
But, alas, Cyd Zeigler, who is a founder of the gay-oriented
OutSports Web site, shows we're not all prissy drama queens and brings some perspective to the matter.
"It's kind of funny," Zeigler said. "Is this an important battle to be fighting with all the other problems gay athletes face? I don't think so."
Besides, after
losing both of their road games so far this year, perhaps the Hawkeyes would find it more rewarding to travel to other campuses and paint those teams' lockerrooms pink.
