Monday Redux
Follow-ups on two posts here at BaT on Monday ...
The
Washington Post rips the Louisiana congressional delegation's money grab.
Like looters who seize six televisions when their homes have room for only two, the Louisiana legislators are out to grab more federal cash than they could possibly spend usefully.Leave it to Louisiana politicians to blow the goodwill of the entire American public with their greed and tin ears.
As for the media's shameful role in the Katrina aftermath, several people are singing the same song as your friend Jake here. The Los Angeles Times
has numerous examples of hyped up and inaccurate reporting based on rumor and outright lies, include some by former New Orleans Police Chief Eddie Compass.
Boi from Troy links to a BBC article of similar nature (although Boi could have read the same information here yesterday!). (Hat tip:
Dave).
And
Professor Reynolds leads us to this opinion piece by Bay Area DJ
Big Rick Stuart, who always wonders about the "ivory" towers of Big Media.
And why was everyone so quick to believe (and report) that a mostly black group of mostly poor gathered together would turn to such violence? Even early reports on cannibalism? These are people like you and me, not some sub human race. When I watched the news reports I wasn't fully buying into the wildest stories, but of course the wildest stories made the news. And they made the news often, without being questioned or fact checked.
I thought the reporting from the area was awful, and I'd even go so far to say racist.
"Go so far" ... no, brother, I don't think that's a big leap at all.
