The 99-Cent Shrimp Is Safe

In a post Sunday night, Ethan referenced the recent hurricanes' impact on the seafood industry based in the Gulf Coast, particularly the end to 99-cent shrimp at all those Vegas buffets. At the time, I commented to him:

I'm not sure the hurricanes will affect cheap shrimp in Las Vegas. Most of that is probably imported from Vietnam anyway.

Unless they use it as an excuse to jack up prices.

Today, we have confirmation.

Oyster prices will jump, but any increase in shrimp prices is likely to be much less, since most of the nation's shrimp are imported, said Sherylyn Harley LeBon, a spokeswoman for the National Fisheries Institute.
Shrimpers and shrimp processors, hit hard for years by cheap frozen imports from Asia, now have to worry that they may lose more customers while they are out of business, said Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board.

So if you're out at your favorite seafood joint and the price for the shrimp platter suddenly increased, call them on it. Then demand a free dessert!

P.S. Don't ask how I know so much about the seafood industry. I really try to forget.
