Things You Read While On An Airplane

1. The guy who brought both Jagermeister and Grey Goose to America is an 80-something-year-old billionaire. When he sold Grey Goose to Barcardi for $2 BILLION, he gave his longtime secretary at $200,000 bonus.

2. The new show on UPN, yes UPN, called "Everybody Hates Chris" -- based on the childhood of comedian Chris Rock -- is being hailed as the "best new show of the fall." Yes, UPN. Yes, best new show of the fall. If these two lines are any indication, I will have to watch:

a. When gunshots erupt at the junior high in Chris' neighborhood, Rock (who who narrates the show) says, "Much like rock 'n' roll, school shootings were invented by blacks and stolen by the white man."

b. Young Chris, now bused to an almost all-white school, befriends another outcast -- a nerd -- Rock says of the relationship, "Mutual ass kickings seem to bring people together."

That's funny, people.

3. "The Iliad" is considered the best war book of all time. Personally, I prefer "Red Badge of Courage" -- No. 4 on this list.

4. Newt Gingrich has no idea who Sam Waterston is. I guess he's too busy to watch one of the 14 blue-billion "Law and Order" series on TV. By the way, I loved "I'll Fly Away," although less for Sam Waterston and more for Jeremy London.

5. Esther Wong, the godmother of punk as owner of famous L.A. band incubator Madame Wong's, died at age 88. Known for her strictness, she once stopped the Ramones in middle of their set until band members cleaned off graffiti on a bathroom wall. She outlived three of the original four Ramones: Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee. Tommy is still alive at last word.
