A Deserving Death?
Dana Reeve, widow of "Superman" Christopher Reeve,
is battling lung cancer. Yeah, smoking will kill you everytime. But wait ...
Though most victims of lung cancer are smokers, Reeve is not, said foundation spokeswoman Maggie Goldberg.
Reeve's announcement came two days after the lung cancer death of ABC News anchorman Peter Jennings, a smoker, at age 67.
Except for lung cancer, where do you ever see the media go out of its way to point out the cause of a natural death (i.e., not from drug use, etc.)? It reminds me of the late 1980s or early 1990s, whenever there was a celebrity AIDS death -- and the media quickly pointed out that it was because of a blood transfusion, least anyone think Joe Superstar was a queer. I can't recall a case of an obituary on a colon cancer victim stating, "Mr. Smith was a longtime eater of pork fat and cheeseburgers." Or a victim of diabetes who "loved to eat whole bags of sugar, covered in caramel."
Thank you, Associated Press, for helpfully reminding us that Mrs. Reeve's disease is not her fault, while pointing out Peter Jennings killed himself. Let's hope Dana Reeve beats the Big C (cancer) -- and the media can find theirs (class).
