I'm Not Fonda Hanoi Jane, But ...

Jay Six and Michelle Malkin agree (apparently this has never happened before) that the Jane Fonda spitting incident -- no, this one doesn't involve her low self-esteem and her ex-husband's love of hooker threesomes -- is outside the realm of civil society. So do I.

Jane Fonda should not be spit upon anymore than those of her ilk should have been spat upon our soldiers as they came back from Vietnam. I once interviewed a man who was subjected to this treatment upon returning stateside. Twenty-five years later, just discussing it made him choke up and his anger was obvious. My uncle, who served his country for 20 years (including time repairing aircraft operating in Vietnam), still has a "Jane Fonda: Traitor Bitch" bumper sticker.

Yet we do have laws in this country -- and we once had manners. This goes to the anti-capitalist nuts who throw pies on people to the kooks who encourage 6-year-olds to hold up "God Hates Fags" signs. If you choose to violate these laws -- it could be deemed assault, although Fonda declined to press charges in this case -- you should be arrested and taken through the court system.

I repeat: Jane Fonda should not be spit upon.

She should have been, however, charged with treason for her actions in Vietnam. March in the streets if you want. Chant. Parade around with signs. You do not provide propaganda to opposing forces at the expense of American soldiers -- and her activities are well-documented. However, the U.S. government decided at the time not to charge Fonda. She has apologized for sitting atop the AA gun, although one could question her original "I-was-young" excuse -- she was 34 years old. But in 2000, she appeared to finally be more contrite.

"I will go to my grave regretting the photograph of me in an anti-aircraft carrier, which looks like I was trying to shoot at American planes. It hurt so many soldiers. It galvanized such hostility. It was the most horrible thing I could possibly have done. It was just thoughtless."

People shouldn't buy Jane Fonda's book. They shouldn't watch her movies. They shouldn't give her one "red" cent. But they shouldn't spit on her. If anything, don't give her the courtesy of being compared to the brave men sent to a jungle far away, betrayed by their supposed leaders and then returned to a bratty nation full of people just like her.
